A film by Tiago Guedes

A violent occurrence transforms a boy’s life forever. During a rite of passage – part of a pagan tradition in a small village in Trás-os-Montes –, a young teenager is brutally beaten by three other boys and ends up with irreversible brain damage. Laureano never recovered and was permanently left with the mental development of a child.

25 years go by and we realize that boy is now a nearly 40-year-old man, who has become an outcast and is treated like the “town fool”. He lives alone in a decrepit house that he inherited from his parents, and is always surrounded by stray dogs who were abandoned by hunters and now roam the fields.

It’s the Feast Day of Saint John and the village is celebrating. For the first time in many years, the three boys – now men – who beat Laureano get together to party.

During the festivities, news arrives that one of their sons was found dead at the edge of the village, having been attacked by a pack of abandoned dogs. This brutal event disturbs the community’s web of relationships. Secrets that had been buried by time are revealed, and all of the characters are thrown into the center of a spiral of conflicts that will ultimately have to be appeased with one more punishment and one more victim.
