3 Leopardo Filmes productions at the São Paulo International Film Festival (Mostra)

THE DOMAIN (2019) by Tiago Guedes, MOSQUITO (2020) by João Nuno Pinto, and MORAL ORDER (2020) by Mário Barroso, produced by Leopardo Filmes, are part of the Official Selection of the 44th São Paulo International Film Festival (Mostra), one of the most prestigious Latin American film festivals, which will take place between October 22nd and November 4th.

THE DOMAIN, one of the greatest successes of Portuguese filmmaking, began its now lengthy journey in competition at the Venice Film Festival in September 2019 (breaking a decade-long streak in which no Portuguese films were in competition at the festival), and followed immediately with TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival), where it was exhibited in the prestigious Special Presentations section; few films have been able to achieve this combination. Tiago Guedes’s epic, starring Albano Jerónimo and Sandra Faleiro, has since then been selected for about two dozen festivals, in every continent, and sold to multiple countries. It was also the Portuguese candidate for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, and the Portuguese candidate in the Best Ibero-American Film category. Having premiered in Portuguese theatres on September 19th, the film remained at the box office for another 4 months, attracting approximately 80 thousand spectators. Additionally, The Domain boasts 15 nominations at the 2020 Sophia awards, in 14 categories including Best Picture. Its exhibition, in a mini-series format, on the ARTE channel (European Culture Channel) achieved unprecedented success for a Portuguese production, gathering over 1.5 million spectators and remaining in the top spot of most viewed series in the channel’s Replay. On RTP, the mini-series version of The Domain was also a major success, with about two million spectators over 4 episodes.

MOSQUITO, by João Nuno Pinto, starring João Nunes Monteiro, achieved an unprecedented feat for Portuguese cinema: it opened The International Film Festival Rotterdam, earlier this year. Since then, it’s been in multiple festivals, from Luxemburg to India to Taipei. It has just received the Special Jury Mention at the Burgas Film Festival, in Bulgaria. Besides the recently announced official selection for the São Paulo International film festival, Mosquito was selected for festivals in Italy, Lithuania and Croatia, among others which will soon be announced. It premiered in Portugal at the end of March, and in France in June, upon the re-opening of movie theatres, where its been showing for over six weeks. It has been acquired for distribution in various countries.

MORAL ORDER marks Mário Barroso’s return to directing (in a film in which he is also the cinematographer). It stars Maria de Medeiros in the role of Maria Adelaide Coelho da Cunha, heiress and owner of the Diário de Notícias newspaper, a free woman who fought arduously against a moralist and punitive campaign against her in the aftermath of her escape with Manuel Claro, her former chauffeur, who was 26 years her junior. Moral Order has as a backdrop Portugal in the days following the Armistice, with the country in the midst of a political and social crisis and facing the “Spanish flu” pandemic. The film will premiere in Portugal on September 10th, and in France on September 30th.
