Dennis Berry (1944-2021)

Director, screenwriter and actor Dennis Berry died last Saturday in Paris, where he lived. His latest film, WILD (2018), an Alfama Films and Leopardo Filmes production, in association with Bando À Parte, will soon be shown by RTP.

Born in the USA, Dennis Berry moved to Paris in the 70s. As an actor, he had small roles in films by directors Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette, Jacques Deray, Joe Dassin and André Téchiné.

He directed, among others, the films Le Grand Dèlire (1975), with Jean Seberg, whom he married in 1972, and Isabelle Huppert, and Chloé (1996), in which Marion Cotillard, whom he discovered, had her first major role. He has a vast body of work for television, having directed several series and telefilms. In 2017 he made a documentary about the actress Anna Karina, to whom he had been married since 1982: Anna Karina, souviens-toi.

In 2018, Dennis Berry presented his last film, WILD, shot in Lisbon and produced by Paulo Branco, at LEFFEST. Actresses Nadia Tereszkiewicz (another one of his discoveries) and Catarina Wallenstein, in the roles of Nora and Léa, dream of Rimbaud, dance at sunset, toast and photograph themselves in satin robes and Victorian canapés, in a waterfront house with a decadent touch. Art and poetry are the language through which they communicate, in an atmosphere where the renunciation of the normative and trivial world is taken to its ultimate consequences.
